· 4 min read
Tết Nguyên Đán 2027, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, falls on Saturday, 6 February 2027. It begins the year Đinh Mùi, the Year of the Goat.
Tết moves every year because it follows the lunar calendar: it was on 17 February in 2026, it is on 6 February in 2027, and it will be on 26 January in 2028. All dates on this page were computed for Vietnam’s time zone (UTC+7) with the lunar calendar library used on lichamviet.com.
This page doesn’t cover official public holiday schedules, which are announced separately each year.

Year of the Goat: Đinh Mùi
Vietnamese years are named with the Can Chi system: one of 10 heavenly stems plus one of 12 earthly branches, giving a 60-year cycle. For 2027:
- Đinh is the stem (2027 ends in 7, and 7 maps to Đinh).
- Mùi is the branch, the Goat.
The previous Đinh Mùi year was 1967; the next will be 2087. How to work this out yourself is in Can Chi and the Vietnamese zodiac.
A note on animals: the Vietnamese zodiac uses the Goat for Mùi, and differs from the Chinese one in another year: Mão is the Cat in Vietnam rather than the Rabbit. So the 2023 Quý Mão year was the Year of the Cat in Vietnam.
The year changes at Tết, not on 1 January. A baby born on 2 February 2027 is still born in Bính Ngọ (Year of the Horse), because that day is the 26th of the 12th lunar month.
The day itself
Tết’s first day, 6 February 2027, is a Bính Thìn day in the month Nhâm Dần. Its giờ hoàng đạo (auspicious hours), traditionally used to pick the time for the first visit or setting out, are the hours of Dần (03–05), Thìn (07–09), Tỵ (09–11), Thân (15–17), Dậu (17–19) and Hợi (21–23). What these hours are and how they are derived: auspicious hours explained.
Tết 2027 is the same day in Vietnam and China
The Vietnamese calendar is computed for UTC+7 and the Chinese one for UTC+8, so the two New Years occasionally fall on different days. In 2027 they coincide on 6 February. They differed in 2007 (17 vs 18 February) and will differ again in 2030 (2 vs 3 February). The full story, including 1985 when they were a month apart: Vietnamese vs Chinese lunar calendar.
